In his own words

The table below says what his one sermon covers. This is what it sounded like.

The heavens are propitious, and if we do right, the Lord our God will be our friend, bless and prosper us in our endeavors to bring to pass this our preparatory work. We will build a temple unto the name of the mighty God of Jacob, here in the wilderness of deserts, amid the forest of mountains, upon the foundation which we this day consecrate unto the Lord of Hosts. We will rear a superstructure wherein we can receive the ministrations of angels and holy beings; wherein we can receive instructions, and perform offices for the redemption of our dead, receive keys for the resurrection of the Saints of God, wherein we can meet the spirits of just men made perfect, and again strike hands with the martyred Prophets, Joseph and Hyrum, and all those who have suffered and died for the testimony of Jesus.

What the sermon covers

Indexed subjects, in order of how often they appear: Temple Block, Temple Ordinances, Hyrum Smith, Temple Building, Aaronic Priesthood, Salt Lake Temple, Endowments, Anointings, Gadianton Robbers, Utah Territory, Mormon Pioneers, Zion.

Where it sits

Volume 2 (1855) holds 56 sermons by 15 speakers, of which 1 is his. Brigham Young carries that volume with 17.

The Journal is overwhelmingly the work of a dozen men. The speakers who appear once or twice are the reason the series is worth indexing in full: they are printed at the same length and with the same care as the presidencies, and almost nowhere else.

Every sermon, in order

The complete list as the Journal prints it. Titles are the printed titles, which routinely name four or five unrelated subjects in one line — each one links to the discourse itself at journalofdiscourses.com.
