Why do Latter-day Saints baptize for the dead?
Because the gospel is preached among the dead. Christ did not go among the disobedient himself; he organized messengers from among the righteous and sent them, and the ordinances still have to be performed on earth. Joseph F. Smith recorded the vision on October 3, 1918, six weeks before his own death, while reading Peter’s account of what Christ did between his death and his resurrection.
